Put the handoff state on the conversation / enquiry record, not only on the customer profile. One customer can have several open threads; staff take over *this* chat, not the person forever.

(Diagram: mode gate on the conversation; n8n reads the gate before any agent reply.)
Suggested model
1. Conversation (or enquiry) fields, for example:
- handling mode (auto / human)
- current handler
- last handled message id / time
- short note on when to resume automation
2. When n8n receives a new WhatsApp message
Read that conversation’s handling mode first: if human, store the message and skip the agent reply; if auto, extract product / quantity / budget and write back to Busabase.
3. Staff takeover / resume
- Takeover: flip mode to human; record handler and last message.
- Resume: flip back to auto only when someone explicitly decides to — the agent should gate on this switch so it does not interject mid-handoff.

(Local demo: add handling-mode fields on the conversation table in Base design.)
Customer-level fields (VIP, default preference) can exist, but they should not be the live handoff switch by themselves.
How to verify the agent paused
- Conversation shows mode = human and a current handler.
- Send a test WhatsApp message: it should be stored, with no agent auto-reply.
- Flip back to auto and send again: agent replies resume.
- If your space requires review, flipping “handling mode” through a change request leaves an audit trail of who took over and who resumed automation.
Boundaries
- Changing only the customer profile leaves other open threads unprotected.
- Without a resume note, chats can stay stuck in human mode indefinitely.
