A single request may turn out to involve several pieces of work that need separate tracking. In Busabase, how should I connect the new records to the original request? Should the original remain open as an overview, or be marked as split so it is not counted as another unfinished item?

When one request turns into several pieces of work, keep the original as the parent overview and create child requests for each trackable piece. Mark the parent so it is not counted as a second unfinished item in the same queue as the children.

Recommended shape
| Record | Role |
|---|---|
| Parent request | Original ask, context, overall success criteria; status like Split / Parent |
| Child requests | Each concrete workstream; Relation → parent; own owner, due date, status |
Optional: a splitFrom link on children and a short note on the parent listing why it was split.
Status rules (important for counts)
- When you split: set parent to
Split(orParent — tracking only), notOpen/In progressif those statuses feed “unfinished” dashboards. - Children carry the real workflow (
Open→In progress→Done). - Close the parent only when all children are done (or cancelled)—or keep parent
Splitand use a rollup/checklist of children. - Views for “my open work” should exclude parent/
Splitrows (filter status ≠ Split, or type = Child).
How to verify
- Open-work count equals the children, not parent + children.
- Opening the parent lists every child.
- Opening a child shows the original context via the parent link.
- Cancelling one child does not silently close the others.
Boundaries
- If the “pieces” are only checklist steps for one owner, a checklist on the same request may be enough—no need to split.
- Split when owners, due dates, or acceptance criteria diverge.
- Do not leave the parent
Open“for visibility” while children are alsoOpen—that double-counts.
If you say whether unfinished work is counted by status or by a checkbox, we can suggest the exact filter for your view.
